Your Guide to Perfect Vision: Eye Care & Glasses Maintenance | Ashoka Watch Company & Eyewear

Welcome to the Ashoka Watch Company & Eyewear family! Since 1962, we have been dedicated to bringing clarity and style to our community.

You’ve just completed your eye test, and you might be wondering, "What's next?" Whether this is your first pair of glasses or your tenth, we want to make sure you understand your eyes and know exactly how to care for your new spectacles.

Here is your simple, jargon-free guide to keeping your vision sharp and your glasses looking brand new.

1. Making Sense of Your Eye Test

When our optometrist hands you your prescription, it can look like a secret math code. Don't worry—it’s actually very simple!

Here is what the letters on your card mean:

  • SPH (Sphere): This number tells us how strong your lenses need to be. A minus (-) means you have trouble seeing things far away (nearsighted). A plus (+) means you have trouble seeing things up close (farsighted).

  • CYL (Cylinder) & AXIS: If you have numbers here, it just means you have Astigmatism. It’s a very common condition where your eye is shaped slightly more like a football than a perfectly round basketball. These numbers help us craft a lens that perfectly balances your unique eye shape.

  • ADD: This is the extra magnifying power added to the bottom of your lenses, usually for reading.

At Ashoka Watch Company & Eyewear, our lab custom-cuts your lenses to match these exact numbers, ensuring you get the sharpest, most comfortable vision possible.

2. Caring for Your New Glasses (Make Them Last!)

Your new glasses are an investment in your daily life. Taking care of them takes less than a minute a day, but it will keep them scratch-free for years.

The Golden Rules of Glasses Care:

  • Always use both hands: When taking your glasses off or putting them on, use both hands. Pulling them off with one hand stretches the frame and makes them loose over time.

  • Don't use your shirt! We know it’s tempting to wipe a smudge with your t-shirt or a paper towel, but fabrics trap microscopic dust that will permanently scratch your lenses. Only use the microfiber cloth provided in your Ashoka Eyewear case.

  • Wash them gently: Once a week, rinse your glasses under lukewarm tap water with a tiny drop of mild dish soap. Dry them gently with your microfiber cloth.

  • Store them safely: If they aren't on your face, they belong in their case. Never leave them face-down on a table, and never leave them on the dashboard of a hot car (excessive heat ruins the anti-glare coating).

3. Everyday Eye Care Tips

Great vision doesn't stop at wearing your glasses. Keeping your eyes healthy is a daily habit.

  • The 20-20-20 Rule: If you spend hours on a computer or phone, your eyes will get tired. Every 20 minutes, look away at something 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. This lets your eye muscles relax and prevents headaches.

  • Eat for your eyes: Green leafy vegetables (like spinach), carrots, and foods rich in Omega-3 (like fish or flaxseeds) naturally protect your vision as you age.

  • Don't skip the UV protection: Just like your skin, your eyes get sunburned. Whenever you step out into the sun, wear sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection. Ask us about turning your prescription into custom sunglasses!
